Our Story
Since 1907, Butler Byers has grown from three partners in a young Saskatoon into one of Western Canada’s largest independent brokers. Four generations of the Byers family have led the firm, and today Scott Byers and Colin Rooke carry it forward from the same downtown corner clients have known since 1978.
What We Do
We help people navigate the insurance maze. As an independent broker, we shop the market on your behalf and build coverage around your life or business, not the other way around.
| For | What we cover |
|---|---|
| Individuals and families | Home, condo, tenant, auto, SGI plate renewals and driver’s licences, RVs, boats, snowmobiles, classic cars, cabins, travel, health and dental |
| Businesses | Property, general and professional liability, cyber, errors and omissions, group health benefits and group retirement plans |
| Industries | Agriculture and forestry, mining and oil and gas, manufacturing, skilled trades, transportation, retail, restaurants, professional firms and non-profits |
Beyond the policy, we offer claims service, risk management (from local shops to worldwide operations) and a free Risk Reduction Plan for businesses. Our Risky Business podcast shares plain-language advice on commercial risk, from cyber threats to business continuity.
Our People
Since 2022, Butler Byers has been led by Scott Byers and Colin Rooke, who pair a century of family tradition with a modern approach to risk.
| Name | Role |
|---|---|
| Scott Byers | Co-owner, CEO |
| Colin Rooke | Co-owner, COO |
Our team is the reason clients stay with us for decades. They’re highly trained, locally rooted and genuinely invested in the people they serve. We back them with continuous learning, equity participation, a wellness committee and a workplace that knows how to celebrate, from National Cupcake Day to puppy parties for the New Hope Dog Rescue and Show and Shine with Rock 102.
In the Community
Giving back has been part of the business since 1917, when founders Newt and Ivan Byers helped start the Rotary Club of Saskatoon. Every generation of the family has been a member since.
Today we’re proud to support organizations that make Saskatoon a better place to live:
- Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saskatoon
- Children’s Festival
- Meewasin Trails
- The Prairie Lily riverboat
- Colliers Cup
- SPCA and Saskatoon Humane Society (staff puppy-party fundraisers)
